Lithuanian Literature Presented in Turkey
The Lithuanian Embassy in Turkey organized 2 events on Lithuanian literature. Dr. Rimvydas Tamošaitis, Docent of Vilnius University Literature Department, presented a lecture Lithuania in Literature and History at Istanbul University on the 15th of November and a lecture Lithuanian literature –Archaic Memory and Modern Aspirations on the 16th of November at Ankara University.
Ambassador Audrius Brūzga greeted the participants and noted that Lithuania is currently preparing for its 100 years independence commemoration and these lectures on literature mark the beginning of the program presenting Lithuanian history and culture in Turkey.
It was the first time Lithuanian literature was presented in Turkey on such a big scale. The lectures attracted a high number of Turkish academic society representatives. The attending audience was informed on the genesis of Lithuanian literature and the most prominent Lithuanian writers. The history of Lithuania was presented with the help of literature examples and with the focus on the novel Between Shades of Gray by Rūta Šepetys that was translated into Turkish language. After the events the books by Rūta Šepetys were donated to the universities of Ankara and Istanbul.
