Nordic-Baltic Climate Cooperation Project Being Implemented in Türkiye

On 29 September, a seminar entitled “Aligning Nordic-Baltic Expertise with Türkiye’s COP31 Priorities: National Policies and Solutions for Municipalities” was held at the Embassy of Lithuania in Ankara, marking the launch of the first joint Nordic-Baltic project in Türkiye, “Nordic-Baltic Climate Cooperation in Türkiye”.

“I am very happy that the Nordic-Baltic family can bring its unique spirit of cooperation to Türkiye,” said Marius Janukonis, Ambassador of Lithuania to Türkiye, in his welcoming remarks.

The seminar brought together representatives of Turkish municipalities, public institutions, international organisations and Nordic-Baltic businesses. Discussions focused on practical opportunities for cooperation in climate technologies, energy efficiency, the circular economy, sustainable and decarbonised urban development, heating and water resource management. The experience gained by Nordic-Baltic countries in these fields can be adapted to the needs of Turkish partners, particularly municipalities. The seminar provided an opportunity to identify concrete areas for cooperation and explore ways to translate dialogue into practical solutions and joint projects.

Running until the end of 2027, the “Nordic-Baltic Climate Cooperation in Türkiye” project aims to establish a Nordic-Baltic climate technology platform in the lead-up to COP31, strengthening cooperation between Nordic-Baltic partners in Türkiye, with a particular focus on green and resilient cities. The project seeks to foster long-term cooperation, facilitate the transfer of technologies and knowledge, implement pilot projects, and promote practical climate solutions that can be adapted to local needs.

The project was initiated by the Consulate General of Sweden in Istanbul and is being implemented in cooperation with partners in Türkiye: the Consulate General of the Kingdom of Denmark in Istanbul, the Embassy of Finland, the Embassy of Lithuania, the Embassy of the Kingdom of Norway, and the Embassy of Sweden. The project is funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers, Lithuania’s Development Cooperation and Democracy Promotion Programme, and national contributions from the project partners.
