SEIMAS OF THE REPUBLIC OF LITHUANIA STATEMENT CONCERNING EVENTS IN THE REPUBLIC OF ESTONIA

3 May 2007Vilnius The Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania, having regard to the intolerable events of 26-27 April 2007 in Tallinn and the resulting internal and international tension,expresses solidarity with Estonia’s position on the removal of the monument to Soviet soldiers from downtown Tallinn to a military cemetery outside the city, showing due respect for the dead;

supports the actions of the authorities of the Republic of Estonia aimed at restoring public order and peace in the city;

notes that vandalism and riots are unacceptable for settling disagreements in a democratic society, and condemns organisers and executors of such acts;

considers as inappropriate the statements by some politicians of the Russian Federation, virtually provoking and instigating further disorders in Estonia, and considers such actions as interference in the internal affairs of the Republic of Estonia;

urges the Government of the Russian Federation to take immediate actions to end the blockade of the Estonian Embassy in Moscow and to ensure the safety of its staff;

emphasises that any direct or indirect actions by foreign states inciting further disorders in the Republic of Estonia are and will be considered as serious breaches of principles of international law, incompatible with good relations between states and principles accepted in a democratic Europe.
